This is interesting because you could put those spinners on a one-way ratchet mechanism so that the cat could grip it and get over the fence in one way but not the other. In this way you could collect cats.

I am starting a cat ranch with 100,000 cats. Each cat will average twelve kittens a year. The cat skins will sell for 30 cents each. One hundred men can skin 5,000 cats a day. We figure a daily net profit of over $10,000.

NOW WHAT SHALL WE FEED THE CATS? We will start a rat ranch next door with 1,000,000 rats.  The rats will breed twelve times faster than the cats. So, we’ll have four rats to feed each day to each cat. Now what shall we feed the rats? We will feed the rats the carcasses of the cats after they have been skinned.

NOW GET THIS We feed the rats to the cats, and the cats to the rats, and get the cat skins for nothing. Shares are selling at 5 cents each, but the price will go up soon.

26

u/Manic_Depressing 14d ago

I'm really trying to find an issue with this business model right now...

34

u/FearlessMeringue 14d ago

A couple minor issues.

Not enough cats are being slaughtered every day to sustain the rat population…

There are 1,000,000 rats who are being fed 5,000 cat carcasses every day. That means each cat carcass must nourish 200 rats. But a rat requires about 60 calories per day, and a cat carcass only contains about 1500 calories. So the rats actually require 40,000 cat carcasses each day.

. …yet too many cats are being slaughtered every day to sustain the cat population.

The average lifespan of a cat on the ranch is only 20 days (100,000 cats / 5,000 cats killed per day). So not enough time to reproduce. Averaging 12 kittens per year doesn’t matter if the cat doesn’t survive past three weeks.

Fix those problems, and I will invest.

47

u/I_furthermore_grace 14d ago

Can confirm. Adopted a kitten while working from home and my office had no door. Thought to myself “EZ PZ, 3 foot tall cardboard box can go in front for now to give me some space when I need to work. She can only jump half as high as this box so it will take her some time to be able to scale it”. Within the week she learned how to running start and keep running up the cardboard enough to grab the top and pull herself onto the box then walk down. I heard some scuffling and turned to see a very happy kitten running towards me because she wasn’t content with our afternoon play session just yet

27

u/Itchy-Log9419 14d ago

I lived in a tiny studio when I adopted my second cat and needed a way to keep her separated from my older cat when I was at work. I used some flattened cardboard that was over 5ft tall. Came home and this tiny 2lb kitten had somehow scaled the whole thing and was sitting in the top of the cat tree staring down at my older cat who was sulking.

Retaining situational control 😅

196

u/TheBirminghamBear 14d ago edited 14d ago

This is a very common reaction across all mammals.

Primates like humans will also perform a sort of grooming gesutre out of embarassment. Gestures like itching the scalp or rubbing the chin are classic grooming gestures that come about in moments of embarassment or uncertainty.

Similarly common is nervous yawning, we see this in a great many mammal species including humans.

36

u/rempel 14d ago

Now trying all sorts of embarrassed expressions and finding this is startlingly correct! I sure am a primate.

9

u/Quirky-Skin 14d ago

It’s funny how those are the like cartoon images to describe a human in those mental states too. Speaks to the validity.

Honestly seeing this ‘constant’ in the behavior of ‘life’, tells me this is all the same ‘bios’, showing up in different chassis.

16

u/TheBirminghamBear 14d ago

It's more like we have different computers from different eras in the computing age inside our heads.

So at the most basic level is like a room full of tape-deck computers, and most mammals and other life with nervous systems have that.

But then there are more and more sophisticated systems layered on top of that. So humans have super-advanced quantum computers, but they're layered on top of older-gen computers and all kinda of networked together

5

u/emilyMartian 13d ago

I spent a ton of money trying to make my fence cat proof in a similar manor. Even added metal flashing below so they couldn’t grab onto the wood. Within two days before testing, a stray cat got in my yard and quickly got back out at a corner. Sadly for me it was a big waste and now my cats have a completely enclosed 20’x20’ area made of dog kennel fencing and heavy plastic bird mesh above it. It’s quite “zoo” like but if they can’t have the whole yard at least we can hang out in a decent amount of space. Best thing I’ve ever done
